A pickup, a phone and a pizza box

- The Gilgo Beach murders went unsolved for years. How did the investigation reach a name after 2022?
- Result
- A first-generation Chevrolet Avalanche remembered by a witness turned out, in 2022, to have been registered to Rex A. Heuermann. Phone records and mitochondrial DNA from a pizza box supported the name; he was arrested on 13 July 2023 and pleaded guilty in 2026.

The source is the 32-page bail application the Suffolk County District Attorney filed on 14 July 2023. I followed only what the filing and the news reports say.

On 11 December 2010 a police dog found human remains beside Ocean Parkway; within two days the remains of three more women were found within about 400 metres.

Page 3 of the filing gives the coordinates of four points and the distances between them; point 4 to point 3 is 1,415 feet.

I placed the four coordinates on independent satellite imagery: all sit on the north edge of Ocean Parkway, in the same order. I computed point 4 to point 3 as 437 m, or 1,433 feet, about 1% from the filing.

2022: the vehicle recordInvestigation
A joint team formed in January 2022 reviewed the file from scratch. A witness had said the killer drove a first-generation Chevrolet Avalanche; on 14 March 2022 such a vehicle registered to Heuermann was found.

From a name to evidenceInvestigation
More than 300 subpoenas, search warrants and other legal requests were used. Heuermann's phone records were compared with those of the “burner” phones that contacted the women; the trail clusters in Massapequa Park and Midtown Manhattan. These records are not public.

According to the filing, on 2 September 2010 a burner phone was in Midtown at 9:32 pm, in Massapequa Park at 10:39 and 11:05 pm, and near West Babylon at 11:17 pm. I tested distances and times on a map: they are consistent.

The pizza box and mitochondrial DNALab
On 26 January 2023 a surveillance team recovered a pizza box Heuermann threw into a trash can in front of 385 Fifth Avenue. On 12 June 2023 the crust swab and a male hair on evidence linked to one victim had the same mitochondrial DNA profile.

Arrest, plea and sentenceInvestigation
Heuermann was arrested on 13 July 2023. In April 2026 he pleaded guilty to murdering seven women and admitted an eighth killing; on 17 June 2026 he was sentenced to life without parole.

- Phone and vehicle records are not public; only what the filing describes is followed here.
- The maps show no homes, only area names and the roadside points printed in the filing.
- Mitochondrial DNA does not point to one person; it follows the maternal line and is weighed with the other evidence.
- Pages of the filing with graphic detail were not used.
