People and companies
Chapter 10 / 18
Find the record behind the brand
A name on a sign may differ from the registered company name.
Choose the right company
Liman Books is a made-up brand. Two companies may have similar names. Check the legal name, registration number and jurisdiction in an official register. Then read its date and status. An old record may not show today’s position.
What does a shared address tell us?
Two companies may use one office address. It may be an accountant’s address. One web agency may make similar sites. A tool in a job advert may not be in use today. Check ownership, management and technical services separately.

A small example
Let’s do it together
Liman Books and another company list one address. You want to decide whether they have the same owner.
Save each company’s registration number separately.
Check the record date and whether the address is a shared office.
Look for the relevant ownership record. State the gap if you cannot find it.
Close the notes. Think first.
Your turn
You find a shell company record. Is this proof of crime?
Read the explanation
No. It may have little or no active business. A crime claim needs separate evidence.
